Artist Description

Park McArthur’s Carried and Held is non-apparent, it exists outside of physical parameters. As a wink to classic museum wall text and citations, McArthur lists a series of names that have “carried and held” her in real life situations naming family members and friends yet, also, “all the young men who felt obligated but unsure in volunteering”. The breadth and variety of names share the same depth of intimacy. McArthur introduces a fresh perspective on the object by not requiring something physical to accompany the text, demonstrating a crip dynamic with labor and presence that undermines how art is usually perceived, allowing for asynchronous embodiment/presence, leakage, and opacity. This new catalog of “artists” also narrates McArthur’s ease with co-authorship stating that the object, herself, is a constant product of meaningful interdependence. As an iterative work that grows with new encounters, it is like a performance that tells multilayered stories with an economy of words. You wonder what was carried, who was held, and paint varying pictures of interaction as you read the list.

Basic Description

A museum label that looks like other labels in the exhibition and The Fralin museum overall: a white label with black font. The label includes the name of the artist (Park McArthur), name of the work (Carried and Held), years of the work (2012-ongoing), and instead of a curatorial interpretation of the work, as is traditionally presented in these formats, McArthur lists the names of individuals who have literally carried and held her over the years. At the bottom of the label there is extra white space to leave room for those who will carry and hold her in the future.
